Community extension is one of the primary thrusts of CIT.
The Community Extension Services (CES) department organizes, supervises, and coordinates programs in support of the Institution’s objectives and goals.
Here are the most recent activities of the respective departments/ colleges:
February – March 2010
A consultation-meeting with the youth of Sitio Bonbonan, Barangay Labangon was held on February 6, 2010. Volunteers from the different colleges as well as the non-teaching staff attended the activity. The extension program presented to the prospective beneficiaries included youth development on the four core areas of development, namely: economic, psycho-social, health, and education.
The CES Mothers’ Class had a seminar-workshop on “A Responsible Life through Creativity in the Arts” last February 6, 2010. Faculty – and student – volunteers for the BS Psychology and AB-Graphics and Media facilitated the activity.
The Architecture Department, in cooperation with the High School Department, conducted the training on Photographic T-shirt Printing (Part I) for the out-of-school youth on February 27, 2010. The training includes sessions on design conceptualization and enhancing drawing techniques. Part II of the training will be on actual photographic T-shirt printing scheduled in the middle of April 2010.
The full-time faculty of the Department of Languages, Literature, and Communication (DLLC) had the final phase of the Refresher Course in English for the mothers of Sitio Callejon on March 6, 2010.
The Electrical Engineering Department conducted the Basic Electrical Wiring Seminar-Workshop, a pre-requisite for Computer Troubleshooting (final module of Computer Literacy Program) for the out-of-school youth of the adopted barangay on March 6, 2010.
On March 13, 2010, the Mathematics Department conducted the final phase of the Refresher Course in Math for the mothers of Sitio Callejon
The Computer Engineering Department conducted the training on the last module of the Computer Literacy Program on Computer Troubleshooting last March 13 & 20, 2010.
High School CAT officers and fourth year students participated in the 18th Coastal and 14th Urban Clean-up on March 20, 2010. This activity was spearheaded by the Cebu Coastline Management Board in cooperation with City River Management Council.
December – January 2010
The CES Mother’s Class presented a dance number and joined the Barrio Fiesta during the CIT Founder’s Day celebration last December 6, 2009. The Mothers Class was trained by the faculty members of the PE Department as part of the Wellness Program that includes physical fitness and ballroom dancing.
SSG officers and teachers of the High School department distributed 160 bags of bundles of joy to the patients of Cebu City Medical Center – Pedia Ward last December 12, 2009.
The College of Commerce hosted the First CES Beneficiaries’ Assembly last January 9, 2010. Around 50 beneficiaries and volunteers gathered to evaluate past activities and plan future projects.
The CES Mother’s Class had a seminar on Solid Waste Management last January 30, 2010. Faculty members of the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics departments served as resource persons. The seminar aims to encourage resource conservation and recovery among the participants.
On the occasion of its 6th founding anniversary, the College of Nursing in partnership with Gawad Kalinga hosted the activity “Tara na sa GK” last January 31, 2010. The volunteers helped in building houses for residents at the Gawad Kalinga-Talisay Site.
October – November 2009
The College of Commerce conducted an orientation on Community Extension Service for student volunteers, faculty and staff last October 3, 2009. The objective of the activity was to acquaint the volunteers on the essence of community extension service as part of the institution’s comprehensive learning approach in higher education and its contribution to community development and nation building. Mr. Vic Bathan, Commerce CES Coordinator spearheaded the activity.
The College of Arts and Sciences sponsored the seminar on Responsible Parenthood for the CES Mother’s Class last October 3 & 10, 2009. It aimed to promote the physical, moral, and spiritual welfare of the family members.
The College of Computer Studies has completed the computer literacy training on Microsoft Office and Introduction to the Internet and the World Wide Web.
Skills Training Program of the College of Engineering and Architecture
Ten out-of-school youth participants are about to complete the Level III training course on Basic Machining mentored by the faculty members of the ME Department in partnership with the JPSME Student Chapter. After the completion of the program, the trainees will undergo a trade test facilitated by TESDA.
The ECE Department conducted Cellular Phone Service training for another group of out-of-school youth.
The Status of Extension Programs of HEIs in Cebu City
Cebu Institute of Technology is one of the respondents on the study on “The Status of Extension Programs of HEIs in Cebu City” funded by the CHED Zonal Research Center and spearheaded by the University of Cebu and the University of Southern Philippines. In line with this study, CES Head Mrs. Rosa Alma Hernaez participated in the Focus Group Discussions (FGD) held at USP last November 14, 2009 while Mr. Jaime Gonzales, CAS CES Coordinator and Mrs. Rosalinda Sanchez, president of the Mothers’ Class of Sitio Callejon attended the validation and action planning workshop held at Cebu Alta Resort in Cordova last November 28-29, 2009.
August- September 2009
For the months of August and September the different colleges and departments, in coordination with the CES Office, conducted various activities in line with the Community Extension Services Program of the school for its adopted community, Sitio Callejon in Barangay Labangon.
The 25 young people from Sitio Callejon adopted by the High School Department attended the One-Day Encounter, a spiritual and fellowship activity, held at the CIT Chapel last August 15, 2009 and a seminar-workshop on ” Kuwarta sa Basura” held at Barangay Luz, Lahug last September 19, 2009.
As part of the Livelihood Development Program of the College of Commerce, the Hospitality Management Department conducted a skill training on Meat Ball Processing and Organic Candy Production last August 01, 2009.
For the continuing Mother’s Class program, the College of Arts and Sciences through the Mathematics Department conducted the Refresher Course in Mathematics last September 5 & 12, 2009.
CIT’s commitment to community service is not only confined to her adopted barangay. The institution also supports the undertaking of other organizations as well as respond to the needs of the wider community.
Last September 6, 2009, the College of Nursing joined the simultaneous nationwide Medical and Dental Program and Pospas Feeding Program of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) held at the Guadalupe Sports Complex in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City. The said activity was part of PCSO’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration.
CWTS students participated in the annual walk for a cause of the Alay Lakad Cebu Foundation, Inc. last September 20, 2009.
On September 26, 2009, CIT hosted Gawad Kalinga’s (GK) 1st BAYANI ASSEMBLY in Cebu, a gathering of all GK corporate partners, volunteers, patriots and friends.
The CES Office has been mobilized to receive relief goods for the victims of typhoon “Ondoy” in Metro Manila and other provinces in Luzon.
June- July 2009
The Community Extension Services Office prepared a one-year MOTHERS CLASS program for residents of Sitio Callejon, which includes short-term courses/seminars on the following: Kitchenomics, Refresher on English and Math, Fitness and Wellness, and Personal and Interpersonal Relationship. With the volunteers from the different colleges/departments, an orientation about the program was conducted for the prospective participants last June 16, 2009.
The College of Nursing initiated the conduct of an awareness seminar on Influenza A (H1NI) virus to residents of Barangay Labangon last June 20, 2009. The seminar aims to orient the participants of the facts about this new strand of the flu virus, measures how to avoid being infected, and what to do in case of infection.
The College of Arts and Sciences conducted seminars on self-awareness using the learning activity on Johari Window (June 27, 2009) and Transactional Analysis (July 4, 2009). Having clarity about who you are and what you want is often a prerequisite to developing better interpersonal relations.
The Department of Languages, Literature, and Communication spearheaded the Refresher Course in English last July 11 and 25, 2009. The program aims to equip the mothers with the basics of the English language so that they can personally tutor their children and, at the same time, improve their communication skills.

CIT “Lakbay Serbisyo” goes to the Barangays
Three barangays in Cebu received free medical and other services through the Lakbay Serbisyo Program of the Cebu Institute of Technology. Specifically, the barangay residents availed the following services: free medical consultation (with blood pressure reading, blood sugar screening, and blood typing), operation tuli, on-site CIT admission testing and pre-enrolment, and career guidance.
Spearheaded by the MIS/SPS Director Engr. Bernard Nicolas E. Villamor in coordination with the Community Extension Services Office, the program was conducted in the following barangays: (1) Tabunok, Talisay City (April 30, 2009); (2) Pakigne, Minglanilla, Cebu (May 9, 2009); and (3) Labangon, Cebu City (May 24, 2009).
Volunteers, consisting of faculty members and students from the College of Nursing and the Department of Hospitality Management, HS and Elementary teachers, and non-teaching personnel and non-academic scholars from different offices, assisted the organizers.
Barangay Labangon Residents Avail of Free Dental Services
Sixty residents from Brgy. Labangon availed the free dental services, which included oral prophylaxis (oral cleaning) and restorative filling, rendered by the CIT – CES in coordination with Cebu Dental Society at the barangay hall last May 15, 2009. Cebu Dental Society sent two doctors, Dr. Rejoyce Tapic and Dr. Sally Lou Barral, and its mobile van for the services conducted while volunteers form the CIT College of Nursing provided assistance
INFORMATION CAMPAIGN
Student volunteers from the departments of Chemical Engineering and Hospitality Management distributed leaflets to Brgy. Labangon residents informing them of the upcoming program for mothers. The one-year “Mothers Class” program will cover three short-term courses, which include: Kitchenomics, Refresher Course in Basic English and Math, Personal and Interpersonal Relationship, and Fitness and Wellness program.
4. February- March 2009
Nineteen Labangon residents completed the free Microsoft Office Literacy training conducted by the College of Computer Studies at Room ST 202 on all Tuesdays of February and March 2008. Ms. Myrliza Villamor, Ms. Erica Jean Abadinas, and Engr. Elyfred Baclaan along with two non teaching staff (Mr. Jonathan Pacana and Ms. Consuelo Migallos), and 16 student- volunteers took turns in facilitating the training.
The College of Commerce conducted a series of business-related seminars to Sitio Callejon mothers who underwent the various “Sariling Sikap” livelihood trainings. The seminar on “Cuarta sa Negosyo, Unsaon Paggasto” facilitated by Mr. Allan Delantar was conducted last February 28, 2008 while the seminars on Micro-Business and Financing and Business Cooperative were conducted last March 8, 2008 with Mrs. Doris Villacastin and Dr. Mansueto Lu as facilitators, respectively.
The year-round English Tutorial Activity of the College of Education ended last February 28, 2008. Forty-seven active student tutors conducted the extension activity twice a week with 77 Grade III pupils identified as slow-learners of Labangon Elementary School.
