Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a profession that concerns itself with mechanical design, energy conversion, fuel and combustion technologies, heat transfer, materials, noise control and acoustics, manufacturing processes, rail transportation, automatic control, product safety and reliability, solar energy, and technological impacts to society. Mechanical Engineers study the behavior of materials when forces are applied to them, such as the motion of solids, liquids, gases, and heating and cooling of objects and machines. Using these basic building blocks, mechanical engineers design space vehicles, computers, power plants, intelligent machines and robots, automobiles, trains, airplanes, furnaces, and air-conditioners. Mechanical Engineers work on jet engines design, submarines, hot air balloons, textiles and new materials, medical and hospital equipment, and refrigerators and other hoMe appliances. Anything that is mechanical or must interact with another machine or human being is within the broad scope of mechanical engineering. (Excerpt from CMO 97, S2027)

Thus, mechanical engineering deals with the art and science of designing mechanical systems and its components concerning generation, transmission, conversion, and utilization of heat and mechanical energy.

Vision

Mission

To provide outcomes-based education in Mechanical Engineering for the development of highly competent, innovative, and upright mechanical engineers.

Program Offered

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
    with Computational Science
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
    with Mechatronics

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEO)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering endeavors to produce graduates who are:
  • Competent to practice the profession and pursue graduate study and/or research work to meet the local and global demands of the professions;
  • Capable of utilizing critical thinking skills to tackle complex mechanical engineering challenges, by employing analytical, and evaluative techniques to develop efficient solutions; and
  • Self-motivated, able to lead others, and uphold the code of ethics of the profession as well as his responsibilities in the community.

GRADUATE ATTRIBUTES (INSTITUTIONAL OUTCOMES)

IO1

Values Driven
Act in accordance with moral and ethical principles personally and professionally

Values-driven Technologian is someone who exemplifies the Core Values of the university. The trait of “values driven” is of primary importance. This is to emphasize that the worth of a person is over and above knowledge and skills.

IO2

Competent
Design and articulate appropriate solutions to real-life scenarios

A Competent Technologian is a well-rounded person (skilled and knowledgeable in a lot of different things) who uses critical thinking (analysis), and problem solving skills in finding solutions to a variety of real-life situations. As a professional leader, he/she is able to articulate his/her ideas or feelings fluently and coherently. With this, the university sees to it that the outcome of its learning activities would produce graduates who are entrepreneurial in spirit, industry-preferred, and life-ready

IO3

Innovative
Execute new ideas with the aim of improving efficiency, effectiveness or competitive advantage

An Innovative Technologian is open to change (adaptable), a willing collaborator (team player), and engages in self- motivated pursuit of knowledge. The trait of being “Innovative” is posed as a challenge to every Technologian. With the fast growing society, the need for novel ways to improve people’s lives is inevitable. Thus, research is made essential in all curricular programs to develop students’ ability to use scientific solutions and find the right resources in their attempt to answer questions and problems that may arise in various social settings or in one’s daily life

IO4

Technology – proficient
Use, develop, and advance technology in the specialized field

A Technology - proficient Technologian is focused on making things happen. Uses technology to communicate effectively and professionally, organizes information, produces high quality products, and enhances one's own ability to think and collaborate

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (PO)

The graduates of the program shall be able to:

  1. apply knowledge of mathematics and science to solve complex mechanical engineering problems
  2. design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data;
  3. design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, in accordance with standards;
  4. function in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams;
  5. Identify, formulate, and solve complex mechanical engineering problems;
  6. understand professional, and ethical responsibility;
  7. communicate effectively;
  8. understand the impact of mechnaical engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context;
  9. Recognize the need for, and engage in life-long learning;
  10. know contemporary issues;
  11. use techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary necessary for mechanical engineering practice; and
  12. know and understand engineering and management principles as a member and leader of a team, and to manage projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.

The department offers two (2) tracks of
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering:

Computational Science

This program gives solution to the growing demand for engineers with fundamental skills in providing solutions to engineering problems by simulating and modelling processes on computers. This specialization in mechanical engineering is about the application of computers to analysis the behaviour of physical properties of matter as it is affected by different parameters. Thus, providing efficient and accurate solutions to engineering problems. Graduates of this program may find themselves in research, machine design and product development, evaluation of thermodynamic processes, and system optimization.
